The group floated through the hotel lobby and stopped at the elevators to catch its collective breath. Midnight was approaching.

“That was a great evening,” Michelle said, leaning on her brother. “You were amazing, Tyler. I always said you were the most talented one in the family. But I’m still the smartest.”

“I’ll give you that,” Ty said. “I wouldn’t be standing here without you — all of you. It means a lot that you were able to share this ride with me. And it’s not over yet.”

Blaine Nelson, Ty’s father, glanced at his watch. The banker wasn’t used to being out late, and the euphoria of the occasion was wearing off. He was already looking ahead to the workweek back in Tennessee.

“Son, I wish we could just hang out in Los Angeles for another week,” he said, “but I’ve got all kinds of things piling up at home. If everything goes well, we’ll try to make it back for the last show.”

“Of course we’ll be back,” his wife, Joyce, said pointedly. “You know we wouldn’t miss it for anything.”

Ty laughed and hugged his family a final time. “Have a good flight and I’ll check on you late tomorrow. Love you. Tell everybody back home hello for me.”

The elevator opened and the Nelsons filed in. Claire was about to follow but stopped when Ty gently reached out and touched her elbow.

“Hang on just a minute,” he said, waving to the others as the door closed again. “Want to have a nightcap? We can talk some more.”

Claire seemed a bit startled but was feeling no pain, no inhibitions. She was still caught up in the moment.

“Sure. Why not?”

They walked down the corridor to the hotel bar and settled at a table in the back. There were just a few customers scattered about, and it took a minute for the cocktail waitress to notice them.

“Bring us two glasses of your best champagne,” Ty said.

“Sorry, sir,” the waitress said, “but we don’t sell champagne by the glass.”

“Okay, a bottle then. Best you’ve got. And please open it for us.”

“Really, Ty?” Claire giggled. “That should sit well with Jack Daniel’s.”

“Doesn’t everything? I just wanted to tell you again how much I enjoy having you with me. It’s an old fantasy, I guess.”

“Fantasy? How so?”

Ty cocked his head with a devilish grin and tried to imagine the scene. He could already feel the heat radiating between them.

“You know you’re gorgeous,” he said. “I’ve always wondered what it would be like …” He was almost afraid to continue. “I’d love to have you come up to the room, but I don’t want to cause trouble. I know you and your husband are separated.”

She took a deep breath and exhaled nervously. “That’s only part of the problem. It’s a bad idea to get intimately involved with clients. That’s what all the agent manuals say.”

“So I’m just a client? That hurts. I thought we were old friends.”

“You know what I mean. I really like you … it’s just that judgment can get clouded in a hurry.
